In the modernization effort, the army must adapt to new battle methods: Año
MANILA, Philippines — Eduardo Año, the former chief of the Philippine Army (PA) and now Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), advised the force to step up its modernization efforts to keep up with developing fighting strategies.
“As the last line of defense in territorial defense after the Air Force and Navy, our Army needs to beef up its modernization program as well.” To keep up with current fighting strategies, we need to keep up with evolving systems, technology, and hardware “On Thursday, Año delivered a lecture at the conclusion of the two-day PA Senior Leaders Conference (SLC) held at the PA headquarters in Fort Bonifacio.
Año also stated that the service’s modernization would be impossible without adequate money while highlighting the government’s support for the program.
“These, however, would be impossible to achieve without adequate budgeting and resources. As a result, rest certain that the PA’s modernization efforts will receive full backing from the national government,” he concluded.
Año was also the chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) before being nominated to the DILG by President Rodrigo R. Duterte in 2018.
PA head Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. promised to maintain the projects started by his predecessor, Gen. Andres Centino, who is now the AFP chief-of-staff, in a speech given before his takeover of command last December.
“It is critical that we pursue this drive so that we may complete the task that was commanded by none other than the Commander-in-Chief (President Rodrigo R. Duterte), namely, ending the local communist armed conflict before the conclusion of his term,” he stated.
In the long run, Brawner believes that the push to provide soldiers with the resources, equipment, and skills they need will help the Army modernize and achieve its goal of being world-class by 2028.
Resources include the essential equipment as well as training for soldiers so that they are ready to face the challenges of neutralizing these threats.
The purpose of the PA’s annual summit is to foster a strategic thinking culture within the business and to promote successful leadership ideas to ranking officials.
The subject of this year’s edition of SLC is “Driving the Transformation Momentum: Winning Tomorrow’s Wars Today.”
Around 70 top officials attended the symposium in person at the Philippine Army Officers’ Clubhouse, with over 200 more participating by video teleconferencing.
The future of warfare and its consequences for Army concepts and capabilities, rethinking military leadership methods, and “future-proofing” the PA were among the three topics covered by local and international subject matter experts.
The SLC, which was first conducted in 2004, is part of a month-long celebration of the Army’s 125th anniversary, which falls on March 22.
On the second day of the conference, the PA also unveiled three sophisticated information systems aimed at providing Army members with timely and appropriate services.
