DOH Urges Caution as Leptospirosis Cases Surge in Ilocos Region πŸ€

🌧️ MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – The Department of Health’s regional office in Ilocos has warned residents about leptospirosis and other water-borne diseases during the rainy season and flooding in the region. They recorded 45 leptospirosis cases from Jan. 1 to July 22 this year, marking a 60 percent increase from the 28 cases in the same period last year.

The affected areas are Ilocos Norte, La Union, Pangasinan, and Dagupan City, where two cases were reported. Sadly, deaths due to leptospirosis have also increased from three in the same period last year to nine this year, marking a 21 percent jump.

DOH-1 medical officer Dr. Rheuel Bobis emphasized that the data were collected before the flooding incidents caused by Super Typhoon Egay, and there’s a possibility of an increase in cases due to recent flooding.

The DOH has provided doxycycline and antibiotics to provincial government health offices for distribution to local government units, especially to those wading in floodwaters.

DOH-1 regional director Paula Paz Sydiongco strongly advised the public not to wade in floodwaters, as they can be contaminated with leptospira bacteria from infected animals like cows, pigs, and dogs. She also urged residents to wear protective gear when going out in the rain and to wash their feet immediately with clean water and soap after contact with floodwater.

Symptoms of leptospirosis include fever, muscle pains, chills, headache, diarrhea, bruising, yellowish skin color, and red eyes. Sydiongco urged those experiencing these symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.

πŸ’‰ Bivalent Covid-19 Vaccines Available in Ilocos Region 🦠

The DOH-1 encourages eligible residents of the Ilocos Region, including healthcare workers, the elderly, and those with comorbidities, to avail of the bivalent coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine. The new guidelines from DOH now include the A3 population (those with comorbidities) to receive the vaccine.

The bivalent vaccine can also be taken as a first, second, or third booster after receiving the primary series or the first and second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. So far, 15,439 individuals in the region have received their bivalent booster shot as of August 4.
